End Your Stories by Dancing with Wolves

February 21, 2010

Have you seen Dances with Wolves? At the very very end, when Dances with Wolves (Kevin Costner) decides he has to leave the Sioux so the army won’t track them down.

He’s leaving the camp, he’s said his goodbyes, and all of a sudden he hears this shout from above. It’s one of his Sioux brothers, the one that is quick to anger but has become a good friend. He’s on his horse on top of a cliff, and he yells at the top of his lungs, “Can you hear me, Dances with Wolves? Can you hear that I am your friend? I will always be your friend!” He’s just up there, unable to contain his love for his friend, and he’s shouting it to the world.

It’s a beautiful, heartbreaking moment, and it made me think: that’s how I want to end my greatest stories. With a moment of raw humanity so powerful that you can’t help but be moved.

How do you want to end your stories?
